Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use my insurance company's preferred contractor?

No, it is your legal right to choose any company to handle the repairs or replacements covered by your insurance. When selecting a company, it’s essential to do your research. A good starting point is checking online reviews. Nowadays, what others say about a company holds more weight than what the company says about itself.

How do insurance companies pay on claims?

This can vary between insurance companies. The payment might be made directly to the contractor, it could be a co-payable check to both you and the contractor (which you would endorse after the work is completed), or it might be payable solely to you. However, you are always responsible for paying your full deductible.

What happens if I accept a cash payout?
In most cases, the insurance company will reduce the original claim amount by 20%. However, in some instances, they may provide a full payout. Within one year of accepting the payout, your insurance company will contact you to confirm that the repairs were completed. If the repairs have not been done by then, they will cancel coverage on items that were not repaired or replaced. It’s in your best interest to contact your insurance company to understand their policy on cash payouts.
My adjuster said there was no damage and I’m not satisfied with that. Now what?
It’s a good idea to get a second opinion if you believe you are still entitled to an insurance claim after inspection.
What happens after the claim is filed?

An adjuster will be out to look at your property, usually around 1-2 weeks after the claim is filed. If the adjuster finds a sufficient amount of damage, you may be entitled to a claim.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Most insurance companies require you to report a possible claim within one year of the damage, though this can vary. We recommend checking your policy for specific details. You will also need to know the date of loss, which is the day your home was damaged. The insurance company uses this date to determine if your claim falls within the required reporting period.
